Packing up

I have been spending the week getting my ducks in a row. Starting Monday I will be spending all day at D.C. Superior Court. I was chosen for Grand Jury Duty (no, you can't get out of it, only defer for 90 days). The idea of not being at work for 27 days is strange. I like my job and will miss the work, my colleagues and the students. I am hoping that this blog will be a way that we can keep in touch. Off to clean my desk.

Don't pack up too much stuff - you have to come back you know! We will miss you, but we're sure you will provide us with an inside look at the justice system. BT

What a great idea. A friend of mine did the grand jury thing last year. Just a hint - make sure you have some wine at home. If not, I'll have some - just stop on by.

My experience was something I cannot forget! There are layers of the culture about which I forget, and here they were displayed for me. I was amazed that the economy of the poor is driven by the drug culture. Anyway, take a book too, it's not all anthropology

I love the blog idea. I am interested to hear how your experience goes. I learned alot from my experience in Federal court in Manhattan: the commute sucked, the pay didn't even cover my transportation, most criminals are just plain stupid and the judge cared about the case less than I did-he slept through most of it!! Good luck!

What a fantastic idea, Lara!
I'll add you to my sidebar's list of blogs that I read.
Amazingly, I've never served on a jury, so I don't have any advice except to take a small, mindless knitting project along with wooden or plastic needles.(This is my standard advice to anyone leaving their home to travel any distance for any amount of time). Perhaps a dishcloth?

Lara,
Good luck and don't forget those books. There will probably be lots of time to catch up on reading over the next 27 days. My experience seving on a criminal court was fascinating - hope you enjoy it. These things can go either way!
